What is a WHOIS lookup?

WHOIS is the public directory of who holds a domain name or a block of IP addresses. A lookup shows the registrar the domain was bought through, when it was created and when it expires, its name servers, its status codes and an abuse contact for reporting spam or phishing. For IP addresses it shows the network's owner, address range and the regional internet registry (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC) that allocated it.

RDAP: the modern WHOIS

This tool queries the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP), the structured JSON successor to the old text-based WHOIS protocol. We find the authoritative registry server for each TLD or IP range from IANA's bootstrap files, so results come directly from the source. For the few country-code TLDs that do not offer RDAP yet, we fall back to classic port-43 WHOIS.

Why is the owner's name hidden?

Since the EU's GDPR took effect in May 2018, registrars redact personal data of individual registrants by default, and many offer free privacy services that do the same for companies. To contact a domain owner, use the registrar's contact form or the abuse address shown. Read more about WHOIS and privacy.

redemption periodExpired and deleted, but the previous owner can still restore it for a fee.
pending deleteWill be released for anyone to register within about five days.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out when a domain expires?

Enter it above; the expiry date and countdown come straight from the registry.

Is this WHOIS lookup free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit for normal use.

How do I check if a domain is available?

Use the domain availability checker, which tests a name across popular extensions at once.
