How to rotate PDF pages
- Drop one or more PDFs onto the drop zone above.
- Choose the rotation: 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° anticlockwise.
- In Pages, list the pages to rotate, for example
2, 5-7. Leave it blank to rotate every page. - Click Rotate PDF and download the result. If you processed several PDFs, each gets its own download button, and Download all saves them as a ZIP archive.
Rotation is applied with pdf-lib in your browser, so the files stay on your device and nothing is uploaded.
Rotating in a viewer vs rotating the file
Most PDF viewers have a rotate button, but it usually changes only the current view. Close the file, email it or print it, and the page is sideways again. This tool changes the document itself, so the new orientation is saved permanently and every viewer, printer and colleague sees it the right way up.
Technically, every PDF page has a /Rotate property that tells viewers how to display it, in multiples of 90 degrees. Rotating a page updates that property, adding your chosen angle to the page's current orientation; the page content itself is not redrawn. That has two useful consequences:
- No quality loss. Text stays selectable and searchable, vector graphics stay sharp and images are not recompressed.
- Rotation is fast, even for long documents, and the file size barely changes.
| Option | Effect on a portrait page | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 90° clockwise | Top edge moves to the right | Landscape page scanned the wrong way |
| 180° | Page turned upside down | Sheet fed into the scanner upside down |
| 90° anticlockwise | Top edge moves to the left | Wide table or chart printed sideways |
Tips
- Scanned documents often have only a few pages the wrong way. Note their numbers in your viewer and rotate just those pages, leaving the rest untouched.
- Pages that need different rotations (some clockwise, some anticlockwise) can be fixed in two passes: rotate one group, download, then load the result and rotate the other group.
- Page numbers refer to the position in the file, starting at 1, not to numbers printed on the pages.
- Rotation changes how a page is displayed; it does not straighten slightly skewed scans.
- Password-protected or encrypted PDFs are not supported. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF (you need its password), then come back.
Frequently asked questions
Will the rotation be saved permanently?
Yes. The rotation is written into the PDF, so it stays in place in every viewer and when printing.
Can I rotate only one page?
Yes. Type that page number, for example 4, in the Pages box. All other pages keep their current orientation.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. Only the page's display orientation changes; content is not re-rendered or compressed.
What if I want to delete a blank or sideways page instead?
Use Remove PDF Pages to delete it. To save particular pages as a separate document, use Split PDF.
