How to convert PDF to Excel
- Drop a PDF onto the drop zone above, or click to choose one.
- Choose how pages map to sheets:
- One sheet per page – page 1 goes to Sheet 1, page 2 to Sheet 2, and so on. Good for reports where every page holds a different table.
- All pages in one sheet – rows from every page are stacked in a single sheet, with an empty row between pages. Good for long lists, such as a bank statement that continues across pages.
- Click Convert to Excel and download the
.xlsxworkbook. - Open it in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Numbers or Google Sheets and tidy up headers or merged cells as needed.
Your PDF is parsed by pdf.js and the workbook is written by SheetJS, all in your browser. Statements, invoices and payroll reports never leave your computer.
How table extraction from PDF works
A PDF does not store tables as rows and columns. Even when a page shows a neat grid, the file usually contains only pieces of text positioned at x/y coordinates, plus some lines drawn around them. There is no "cell" object to read.
To rebuild a table, the converter reads the position of every text fragment on the page. Fragments at the same height form a row. Within a row, a wide horizontal gap between fragments starts a new cell, while closely spaced words stay together. Cells that contain only a number are stored as real numbers, so you can sum and chart them straight away.
This is why the quality of the output depends heavily on the PDF:
| Type of PDF | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Exported from Excel, accounting or banking software | Good – clean rows and columns |
| Report with tables and surrounding paragraphs | Tables usable; paragraph text lands in cells too |
| Multi-line cells or merged headers | Needs manual clean-up |
| Scanned paper document or photo | No usable data – the page is an image |
Tips for better results
- Check whether the PDF has real text. Try selecting a number in your PDF viewer. If you can't, the file is a scan and needs OCR (optical character recognition) first; this tool does not perform OCR.
- Long tables split over several pages are easier to work with in All pages in one sheet mode. Delete repeated header rows afterwards with a filter.
- Values with currency symbols, percent signs or units stay as text. Numbers like
1,234.56become real numbers. Values written with a decimal comma (such as12,5) are kept as text so they are never misread; Excel's Find & Replace or Text to Columns converts such columns quickly. - If the PDF is mostly prose with an occasional table, PDF to Word may be the better choice.
- Password-protected or encrypted PDFs are not supported. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF (you need its password), then come back.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my sheet say "no text on this page"?
That page is almost certainly scanned or built from images, so there is no text to extract. It needs to go through OCR software before conversion.
Will formulas be recreated?
No. A PDF stores only the displayed values, not the formulas that produced them, so the workbook contains values.
Why are some columns shifted?
Cells are detected from the gaps between pieces of text. Empty cells, wrapped text or merged headers can make a row have fewer or more cells than its neighbours, so values move left or right. A quick manual check is always recommended.
Can I go the other way?
Yes. Excel to PDF turns XLSX, XLS, ODS and CSV files into PDF tables.
