How to convert 7Z to ZIP
- Select your
.7zarchive with Choose a file, or drop it onto the upload area. - Ignore the Password (only if the archive is encrypted) box. It is used for encrypted ZIP sources only; a password-protected 7Z cannot be read in the browser.
- Click Convert to ZIP and wait while the files are decompressed and re-packed.
- Click Download to save the ZIP. It is named after the original, so
project.7zbecomesproject.zip.
The 7Z is opened locally by libarchive running as WebAssembly, and the ZIP is built by zip.js. No file leaves your computer.
7Z versus ZIP: why convert
7Z is the native format of 7-Zip. Its LZMA compression usually squeezes files noticeably smaller than ZIP's Deflate, which is why software installers, game mods and backup sets are often distributed as 7Z. The downside is support. Only recent Windows 11 updates open 7Z natively; Windows 10, many phones and tablets and most online services still need an extra app, while ZIP opens almost everywhere with a double-click.
Converting is useful when you received a 7Z and need to pass the contents on to someone who is not technical, attach it to a form that only accepts ZIP, or open it on a locked-down work computer where you cannot install 7-Zip.
What to expect from the ZIP
- Size: the ZIP is compressed with Deflate at the normal level. Expect it to be larger than the 7Z, sometimes considerably so for text, code and databases, which LZMA compresses very well. Already-compressed content such as JPEG photos or MP4 videos will barely change in size.
- Structure: every file keeps its path, so the folder tree looks the same when you unzip it. Folders that contained no files are left out.
- Dates: original modification dates cannot be read from a 7Z in the browser, so the files in the ZIP carry the current date. If exact timestamps matter, extract the 7Z with 7-Zip on your computer instead.
- Encryption: the ZIP is created without a password.
Tips
- If you just need to get at the files, Extract 7Z lets you download individual items without creating a new archive.
- Peek inside first with the ZIP Viewer, which also reads 7Z archives and shows names and sizes.
- Need to rename or remove files from the result? Open the converted ZIP in Edit ZIP.
- Prefer a Linux-friendly tarball instead? The Archive Converter turns a 7Z into TAR.GZ or TAR.XZ as well.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 7Z file show an error?
The most common reason is encryption. Password-protected 7Z archives cannot be opened in the browser. Extract them in 7-Zip with the password and then use Create ZIP on the extracted files.
Why is the ZIP bigger than the 7Z?
ZIP's Deflate algorithm is older and less efficient than LZMA. The data is identical once extracted; only the packing differs.
Will Windows open the converted file?
Yes. The output is a standard, unencrypted Deflate ZIP, which Windows File Explorer, macOS Finder and other common unzip tools open directly.
How large can the 7Z be?
Files are decompressed into browser memory. Up to about 700 MB works smoothly; larger archives are slower, and inputs above 2 GB are refused.
