How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop one or more .jpg or .jpeg files onto the upload area.
  2. Click Convert to PNG. There is no quality setting, because PNG is lossless.
  3. Download the PNG images.

Everything happens locally in your browser, so the photos are never uploaded to a server.

Understanding JPG and PNG

JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photographs. It uses lossy compression: each time a JPG is saved, the encoder simplifies the image in small 8 × 8 pixel blocks to keep files small. That is great for storage, but the losses add up when an image is edited and re-saved repeatedly, and they show up as blocky artefacts and halos around text and sharp edges.

PNG stores images losslessly. Whatever pixels you put in come back out exactly, no matter how many times the file is opened and saved. PNG also supports full transparency through an alpha channel, which JPG does not.

Why convert JPG to PNG?

  • Editing without further loss. Converting to PNG before cropping, annotating or retouching means every later save is lossless. Convert back to JPG only at the end, if you need a small file.
  • Adding transparency. To remove a background, you need a format with an alpha channel. Convert to PNG first, then erase the background in your editor.
  • Graphics and text. Diagrams, scanned documents and screenshots stay crisp as PNG when you annotate them.
  • Software requirements. Some design tools, game engines, print services and app stores require PNG files.

What to expect

Converting a JPG to PNG does not improve image quality. Detail that the JPG compression already discarded cannot be recovered; the PNG is an exact copy of the JPG as it looks now. What PNG gives you is protection from any further loss.

Expect the PNG to be noticeably larger than the JPG, often three to five times for a photo, because lossless compression cannot discard the fine noise present in photographs. For a web page, that extra weight is rarely worth it; consider JPG to WebP if your goal is a smaller, modern web image instead.

Tip: Need to change the size as well? Resize Image can scale photos and output PNG in one step.

Frequently asked questions

Does JPG to PNG make my image better quality?

No. The PNG looks identical to the JPG. It simply prevents additional quality loss when you edit and save the image again.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, including the subtle noise in photographs. JPG achieves its small size by discarding that detail.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

Not automatically. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts fully opaque. You can then remove the background in an image editor and save the transparency in the PNG.

Can I convert several JPGs at once?

Yes. Drop any number of JPG files and they are all converted to PNG.
