Split PDF

Split a PDF online: save every page as a separate PDF, split by page ranges or extract selected pages into a new file. Free and private.

Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.

How to split a PDF

  1. Drop a single PDF onto the drop zone above, or click to choose one.
  2. Pick a split mode:
    • Every page into its own PDF – a 12-page document becomes 12 one-page files.
    • By page ranges – each range you type becomes a separate PDF.
    • Extract pages into one PDF – the pages you list are collected into a single new file.
  3. For the range and extract modes, enter page numbers in the Pages box, for example 1-3, 5, 8-10.
  4. Click Split PDF. Each new PDF appears in the results with its own Download button, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP archive.

Splitting runs locally with pdf-lib, so the document stays on your device and is never uploaded.

Page ranges explained

Page numbers always refer to the physical position of the page in the file, starting at 1, not to the number printed on the page. A report whose cover and table of contents are unnumbered may print "1" on what is actually page 3 of the PDF. Your PDF viewer's page counter shows the physical number.

Ranges are separated by commas. A hyphen joins the first and last page of a range, a single number stands for one page, and an open range such as 8- runs from page 8 to the end. The same input is interpreted differently depending on the mode:

InputBy page rangesExtract pages
1-3, 5Two files: pages 1–3 and page 5One file with pages 1, 2, 3 and 5
1-10, 11-20Two files of ten pages eachOne file with pages 1–20
4One file containing page 4One file containing page 4

In extract mode the pages are always kept in their original document order, even if you type them in a different order. Like merging, splitting copies page objects into new documents instead of re-rendering them. Text remains searchable and images keep their original resolution.

Tips

  • To remove a handful of pages rather than keep them, Remove PDF Pages is quicker: you list only the pages to delete.
  • To reassemble pieces in a different order, split first and then combine the parts with Merge PDF, where you can move files into any order.
  • Splitting does not shrink individual pages. A one-page file that uses large embedded fonts or images can still be big; Compress PDF helps there.
  • Password-protected or encrypted PDFs cannot be split. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF (you need its password), then come back.
  • Extracted files may be slightly larger than you expect because fonts shared across the whole document are copied into each part that needs them.
Tip: Splitting a scanned book or a long statement into chapters? Note the physical page number where each section starts, then enter all the ranges at once in "By page ranges" mode.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save just one page of a PDF?

Choose "Extract pages into one PDF" and type the page number, for example 7. You get a single-page PDF.

How do I download all the parts at once?

Use Download all below the results. It bundles every PDF into one ZIP archive, which most operating systems open with a double-click. Files are named after the pages they contain, such as report-pages-1-3.pdf.

Does splitting lower the quality?

No. Pages are copied without re-rendering or recompression, so the output looks identical to the original.

Can I split several PDFs at once?

The splitter works on one PDF at a time, so page ranges always refer to a single document. Repeat the process for each file.
