How to convert PNG to JPG
- Drop one or more
.pngfiles onto the upload area. - Set the Quality slider. 80 is a good balance; choose 90+ for photos you may print, or 60–70 for the smallest files.
- Click Convert to JPG and download the images.
The conversion runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded or stored on a server.
PNG and JPG: two formats, two jobs
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) uses lossless compression: every pixel is stored exactly. It also supports an alpha channel for transparency. That makes PNG ideal for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text, but it is inefficient for photographs, where the many subtle colour variations produce very large files.
JPG (or JPEG) uses lossy compression designed specifically for photos. It discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, typically making a photo several times smaller than the same image saved as PNG. JPG is the most universally supported image format: every camera, phone, browser, operating system, email client and upload form handles it.
| PNG | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy, adjustable quality |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
| Photo file size | Large | Small |
| Sharp text and lines | Perfect | Can show slight artefacts |
When to convert PNG to JPG
- Photos saved as PNG, for example exported from an editor or captured as a screenshot of a photo, are often 3–10 times larger than they need to be.
- Upload limits on websites, forums and job portals often reject large files or accept only JPG.
- Email and messaging: smaller attachments send faster and fit mailbox limits.
- Web pages load faster with lighter photos.
Keep PNG for logos, icons, interface screenshots and text-heavy graphics, where JPG's compression can blur sharp edges and the size saving is smaller.
What happens to transparency
JPG has no alpha channel, so it cannot store transparent pixels. During conversion, transparent and semi-transparent areas are placed on a white background. That works well for documents and most web pages; if you need the transparency itself, convert to WebP instead with PNG to WebP, which keeps the alpha channel and is usually smaller than JPG too.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, so a tiny amount of detail is discarded. At quality 80 or above the difference is usually invisible in photos. Sharp text and fine lines are where artefacts appear first.
Why is my transparent background white?
The JPG format does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Use PNG or WebP if you need to keep it.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
For photographs, a JPG is commonly 70–90% smaller than the PNG. For simple graphics with flat colours the saving is smaller, and the PNG may even be the smaller file.
Can I convert many PNG files at once?
Yes. Drop as many PNG images as you like; they are all converted with the same quality setting.
