How to use the IP lookup tool

Type an IP address such as 203.0.113.10 or 2001:db8::1 into the box and press Look up IP. You can also enter a website name like example.com: we resolve it to its IP address first and then locate that address. Results include the country, region, city, approximate coordinates, time zone, the internet service provider (ISP), the organization the address is assigned to and its autonomous system number (ASN).

What can an IP lookup tell you?

  • Where traffic comes from. Investigate a login alert, a suspicious entry in your server logs or the source of spam.
  • Which network owns an address. The ISP, organization and ASN show whether an IP belongs to a home broadband provider, a mobile carrier, a hosting company or a cloud platform.
  • Time zone and region. Useful when scheduling, localizing content or checking whether a VPN exit is where it claims to be.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP location databases are built from regional internet registry records, ISP routing data and measurements. They are generally reliable at country level, but city-level results can be tens of kilometres away because many ISPs route customers through a regional hub. Mobile networks, VPNs, corporate proxies and satellite internet can place an address in an entirely different city or country. An IP lookup never reveals a street address or a person's name. Private and reserved addresses

Addresses such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16–31.x.x, 127.0.0.1 and IPv6 fe80:: addresses are only meaningful inside a local network, so they have no public location. The tool tells you when you enter one. Learn about public and private IPs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find someone's exact address from their IP?

No. Only the ISP can map an IP address to a subscriber, and it discloses that only under legal process. Public lookups show the approximate area and network.

Why does the lookup show a different city from where I am?

Your ISP may register its address blocks to a central location, or you may be connected through a VPN, proxy or mobile gateway in another city.

Can I look up IPv6 addresses?

Yes. Enter any global IPv6 address in full or compressed form.
